China at the Market

Farmers Markets often present their own special version of the United Nations in the various vendors from the global family that utilize this venue as a showcase to display their wares. At both the Dieppe Farmers Market and at the Marché Moncton Market, Teng Jing’s booth of gifts from China opens up a window on the East. Originally from China, and now a resident of Moncton for the past three years, Teng Jing is helping to shine a spotlight on the culture of her homeland in a cornucopia of wondrous gifts from the fabled "silk route" of ancient times. Beautiful and colourful closonné jewellery and Christmas ornaments, enamelled beaded key rings and earrings, mysterious jade and amber bracelets and necklaces, silk tasselled drawer pulls and scarves, change purses in leather, pictures, books, fans, clothing, chopsticks in their exotic wrappings highlight a country of origin with a unique blend of ancient wisdom, original crafts, and mysterious customs, and a modern, new outlook. Representing a definite Chinese demographic in the Greater Moncton Arena, which goes back decades in the history of our region, and indeed our country, this wonderful booth at both markets presents the artistic and cultural flavours of one of the earth’s oldest civilizations.

Teng Jing is the person who has brought us this exotic glimpse of China at the markets. The Executive Director of the Confucius Institute in New Brunswick Atlantic Education International, Inc. of 1077 St. George Boulevard in Moncton, Teng Jing is a teacher by profession. An instructor in the Chinese language to area high school students, Teng Jing also teaches adults who want to learn Chinese. Her booth at both markets is her way of sharing the Chinese culture with area residents. A great place to stop and browse, these booths are filled with terrific gift ideas for the upcoming festive season. For a unique gift idea for family, friends, co-workers, teachers, or even the boss, there is certainly lots to choose from. When visiting either market next, stop by an experience a small slice of China in our very own backyard!
