Tim Sears – Artist in Wood

Tim Sears is a local artisan whose medium is wood. A master craftsman, Tim’s line of keepsake boxes are unique, self-contained mini-worlds skilfully wrought from exotic woods. True masterpieces, their intricately interlocking forms seem to flow with fluid movement. It is sheer poetry in wood. All Tim’s pieces are museum quality with a lyricism that is almost musical. Daliesque with a touch of Picasso in 3-dimension, they are also reminiscent of the works of the great Canadian artist, Bill Reid. Freeform swirls delight those with an artistic vision, while the utilitarian purpose as storage for trinkets and treasures appeals to the practical. Tim Sears’ work reveals a complexity of thought, the deftness of a practised hand combined with the talent and soul of an artist.
Tim Sears’ journey into woodworking began in 1973 with a grade 8 shop class where he developed a passion for the creative drive which remains to this day. A newspaperman by day, Tim Sears’ career path has led him to a fulfilling job at a local news enterprise where he works with the public on a daily basis. As a reprieve from the hectic, day-to-day pace of a busy career, Tim finds solace in his expanded workshop where he can unleash a fertile imagination and commune with his creative powers. The results are simply magical! Of his keepsake boxes, Tim says, “The projects I have been working on for the past few years include the very unique keepsake boxes. Made from various exotic hardwoods, these projects though very time consuming invoke a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when completed. Their unique styles and ever changing wood grain make them a joy to look at.” Tim credits his wife, Chris, for the support and insight she brings to his craft, recognizing various sources of inspiration for his unique vision. “My inspiration has come from many directions over the years... including fellow woodworkers from around the internet,” says Tim.Tim Sears’ wonderful keepsake boxes can be seen at Sandstone’s Gallery and Gift Shop located in the Blue Cross Centre in lovely Downtown Moncton. Beautifully displayed, these works of art possess an elegance and classicism that is timeless. This season, choose one as a perfect accent for your home or as a special gift for family or friends. It is a privilege to own a Tim Sears original! Want to see more of Tim’s work? Check out his upcoming website which will be up and running in early December, 2008, at www.woodenspired.ca and share in the unique talent on one of the Greater Moncton Area’s foremost artists in wood! Kirkpatrick Pottery

Kirkpatrick Pottery of Riverview is where artistic vision and entrepreneurial drive come together to produce works of art that are both beautiful and functional, and a business enterprise that is truly ambitious. An integral part of the Town of Riverview’s artistic profile for the past 12 years, Kirkpatrick Pottery has grown from a one-woman operation to encompass a staff of three as demand for quality, handmade, beautiful, and useful utensils and collector items has increased in a demographic that includes the individual collector, craft festivals, juried shows, and local gift shops. Having produced pieces for shipment to every province throughout Canada, and New England, Kirkpatrick Pottery has carved a niche for itself as a formidable small, home-based business that is successful and rewarding, not only to its creator Kim Kirkpatrick, but to the stories of collectors who seek her wonderful works of art.
Kirkpatrick Pottery produces three district lines of pottery in the denim blue "Lightening" pattern, the cream "Victorian" design and a brand new variegated green collection which will hit the market later this year. Producing everything for the well-dressed table from specialty pieces such as small olive dishes, chip & dip platters, mugs, and dinnerware, Kirkpatrick Pottery also offers unique offerings such as their popular dory boat dish perfect for nuts, potpourri, or even a tea-light candle, and their covered butter dish which is perfect for the table as it’s designed to camouflage a commercial margarine tub. Perfect as accent pieces throughout the home, Kim’s pottery is designed to match any decor. A unique gift for family, friends, or colleagues, Kirkpatrick Pottery can be purchased a piece at a time or in an entire collection, as in the case of a complete dinner service. With the help of assistants Lisa Beers and Kim Lutes, Kim Kirkpatrick has made her dream a reality with a full scale production that begins with an idea that is kneaded into clay, rolled out and shaped, decorated with slip, fired and glazed, and packed for shipment to various destinations for sale. A true hands-on enterprise, Kim recycles her clay, designs and cuts her own moulds, and produces art for everyday use in one-of-a-kind and safe, affordable pieces of pottery – and all her pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe.
The quintessential modern woman who does it all, Kim Kirkpatrick is a multifaceted individual. A devoted wife and mother to two school-aged children, she comes to her business enterprise well qualified indeed. Kim holds a degree in business administration from UNB as well as a diploma from the New Brunswick Community College School of Art in Fredericton. Yet, the seeds of what would become a life-defining vacation may have been planted in childhood as Kim’s own words convey: "As a child, I would dig clay from the shore at Grand Lake and let my creations dry in the sun. Who knew, but God, that it was only the beginning of a passion and a way of life? I am blessed to be able to create and work with what I love."
