Nick Gaines – 111 Faces

We’ve all heard the old adage, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” so what are 111 pictures worth? Why, just one word – superb! The 111 Faces show put on by local photographer Nick Gaines at 16 Church Street on September 1, 2008, proved to be a huge success. The launch of this special showing of the art of photography was compelling, visionary, and sometime edgy – all qualities that describe the artist himself. In an ambitious undertaking, this feature exposition served to define the art and the man behind it in a dramatic display of black and white portrait photography capturing every mood and nuance of the human experience brought to life by the many memorable faces – all friends, family, neighbours, or co-workers of our fellow area residents. This juxtaposition of the familiar with the extraordinary proved a dynamic happening indeed! Skilfully presented with well-chosen props, all in the theme of black and white, graceful draperies, vintage cameras, a tea-table for two, candelabra and flora all conspired to create magic. Live music, a bar, and nibbles made for a true party atmosphere worthy of a real bacchanalia. It was a heroic effort.

Nick Gaines is a young, enthusiastic, and up-and-coming area photographer who has always trod an unbeaten path. Defining his own vision and style, he has departed from the pedestrian approach to his art by testing boundaries. The result is awe-inspiring. Destined to take his place among the finest artists in photography in our area, Nick Gaines is well on his way to creating a unique niche in his chosen field.

111 Faces will travel to Fredericton for a special showing at the end of September, and Nick Gaines is already planning a new show titled, “Red Sheets,” to open this year.
