Hofer’s German Bakery’s commitment to healthy eating is the primary concern of operators Oliver and Tatjana Hofer. With pride in a menu of authentic German foods made from scratch and offering the finest in fresh, organic ingredients, Hofer’s German Bakery “cooks like grandmother did, with no preservatives or added chemicals,” as Oliver Hofer says. “People today are more aware of the healthy benefits of natural foods and we only purchase organic meats, poultry, and vegetables from the local farmers markets. Even our bouillons are made from scratch,” says Oliver Hofer who recognizes that, increasingly amongst his customers, eating habits have changed for the better. “For example, our breads are all sugar free which is great for everyone, including diabetics and people who suffer from allergies. Today’s customers are more in tune with a healthy lifestyle and that includes attention to their eating habits” – and at Hofer’s German Bakery, catering to healthy eating is what they do best!

Oliver and Tatjana Hofer came to Canada from Germany in 2003. Oliver grew up in a family of bakers and is himself a Master Baker and Pastry Chef. The Hofer’s acquired the original site of the European Bakery in 2003, bringing their own brand of “Home Cooking” with organic ingredients to area residents. Voted one of the best places to eat by the independent food guide of Ann Hardy’s publication of Where to Eat in Canada, this exceptional eatery has now taken on the distinctively German flavour of its proprietors to become Hofer’s German Bakery. Completely redecorated inside and outside in a charming style with the easy ambiance of a German country inn, Hofer’s German Bakery is truly a respite from the ordinary.

With a team of seven skilled employees which includes Oliver and Tatjana, Oliver explains “Tatjana and I are a great team! Tatjana does all the cooking and as an excellent cook her meals are delicious. I do all the baking. It takes time and manpower to prepare good food and we do not compromise on quality.” The result is a delicious menu of luscious sandwiches, hearty soups, homemade style breads, sumptuous desserts with real butter and whipped crème made in the European style with low sugar content. An expanded customer base now includes other businesses such as the Shediac and Dieppe Co-ops, restaurants, and bistros as well as a booth at the Marché Dieppe Market to whom Hofer’s German Bakery provides delivery of cooked goods and other components like pita bread and pizza dough. Offering both eat-in and take-out service, Hofer’s German Bakery opens at 8:00 AM for breakfast and has a thriving lunch-time patronage, ending the day at 6:00 PM or 6:30 PM.
