Winegarden Estate Ltd.

The first family-owned wine-distillery in Atlantic Canada, the Winegarden Estate Ltd. was established in 1991 by Werner and Roswitha Rosswog who immigrated to Canada in 1983 choosing to retire in the picturesque town of Baie Verte, New Brunswick . Originally from the Black Forest region of Germany where their grandfather, Johann Ziegler, Sr., was a vine grower, they brought L with them a long tradition of distilling local fruit into wine and liqueur. Their closely guarded family recipes can now be enjoyed by a new market in Canada. Indeed, it is through the individual cultural threads of immigrants from other lands that the tapestry of Canada is woven.
Winegarden Estate Ltd. offers a unique shopping experience of more than forty different products including fruit and grape wines, schnaps brandy and liqueurs made from choice New Brunswick fruit such as apples, cranberries, elderberries, and blueberries with many samples of their products to try.
As every wine lover knows, a fine wine adds ambience to good food and prestige to any serious collector’s cellar. Today’s consumer is more discriminating and knowledgeable of wine and liqueurs, and in today’s hectic, fast-paced lifestyle, people look forward to relaxing with good food, friends, and fine wine. As the Winegarden Estate’s own motto reads “Wine and Dine With New Brunswick Grown Wine.”
When thinking of fine wines, one may think of the legendary vineyards of Europe or their counterpart in the New World being the wine valleys of California, but right here in rural New Brunswick can be found one of the finest wineries in Canada. Although the wine industry in New Brunswick is still young, Winegarden Estate Ltd. has been in operation for ten years.
The Winegarden Estate Ltd. was first established as a commercial enterprise in 1991 when Werner and Roswitha Rosswog saw the abundance of fruit on their new farm land and observed much of it just laying on their neighbouring farmers’ fields rotting away. Drawing upon their family tradition of wine making, they first began to distill apple schnaps. The first product was Johnny Ziegler’s Apple Schnaps in honour of Johann Ziegler, Sr. The result was the establishment of the Rosswog Farm-Distillery. It was the first private fruit wine-distillery in Atlantic Canada. In 1997, the first farm winery license was issued in New Brunswick to the establishment and to bring the story of the Rosswogs full circle the first exports to Europe were accomplished in 1998.
Located at 851 Route 970 in Baie Verte, it is one hour from Moncton on the way to PEL It is ideally located as a stop off point for tourists and in the summer conducts daily tours which begin at 2 p.m. for tourists and locals alike who wish to learn more about their operations and their product or to make a purchase from their fine selection. The store is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
An exciting new product on the market is the New Brunswick CuvPe – the first New Brunswick grown and produced red grape wine made using traditional skills and vinter technology of pressing and fermenting freshly gathered red wine grapes from a number of New Brunswick farms. It is a dry, red grape wine with a distinct and delicate regional charm that is harmonious with many international cuisines. Prices are competitive and affordable.
Now a certified fermentation centre, the Winegarden Estate Ltd. has formed a fruit farmers co-op to help other smaller family farm and cottage industries to produce their own beverages providing a market for each other’s product. They have been greatly instrumental in helping the local economy by buying fruit from local farmers and attracting tourists to the area. In 1999, son Steffen and daughter Elke joined the family firm and the Rosswog Farm-Distillery officially became the Winegarden Estate Ltd. with shares handed down to the fifth generation. Also in 1999, the first annual open-air Wine Festival was held. It now takes place annually on the second Sunday of August beginning at 12 p.m. and always promises lots of fun, festivity, and opportunity to sample the product.
